The Mindset of Successful Bunker Play

What I am about to say is completely obvious but…..you can’t get good out of bunkers just by being positive and having a good attitude. You’re going to have to work on your technique and the variety of shots required. That being said, as with every aspect of the game, you’re going to have to approach the sand with the correct mindset.

The very first thing is “let go” of the shot that put you in the bunker. Unless it was part of your strategy (it’s only ever really pros that aim for bunkers in certain situations), the chances are that you didn’t want to be there. After what may have been a poor shot, you may be carrying some annoyance to the sand with you. Here’s the thing, it’s done. You’re in there and taking anger and tension in there with you won’t help. Bring your focus and concentration to choosing the most appropriate shot and executing it freely.

We can all learn from my 5 year old son when it comes to Bunker shots. He LOVES the challenge. He gets excited to get down into the sand and show off his ability to get out and close to the hole. Don’t get lost in a pit of negativity, why not flip it around and have fun with the opportunity to hit a great recovery shot?  When you nail the shot that you have chosen then you can turn a “bad” situation into a good one.

Finally……… take      your     time.

It’s easy to rush in with your 60 degree wedge and smash it out in a wave of annoyance. Instead, stick to your routine and assess the situation. Ask yourself the question: “What would be the best way for me to play this shot to give the best chance of going in the hole?”

All that’s left is to execute a free swing of the club, trusting the practice you have put in.
